The Process

Five Stages to Accreditation

UKAB's rigorous five-stage process ensures every accreditation decision is evidence-based, technically sound, and impartial — from your first submission to your certificate of accreditation.

01
Initial Stage
Complete Application Form

The first stage is for the Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) to complete and return their application, including all relevant documentation requested within the application form, together with payment, to our address.

02
Documentation
Systems Assessment

UKAB reviews the application documents against the relevant accreditation criteria and provides a written report to the applicant. The next stage of assessment will not proceed until the documented management systems fully meet the requirements of the applicable standard.

Comprehensive documentation review — all non-conformities must be resolved before on-site assessment begins.
03
On-Site
Assessment

UKAB selects a qualified assessment team who undertake an on-site assessment at the applicant's offices. The team also witnesses the applicant's assessors conducting assessment activity at their client's premises. On completion, the assessment team produces a detailed findings report with recommendations.

Expert assessment team deployed — includes witness assessment at client premises.
04
Review Panel
Review of Assessment Report

UKAB forms an Accreditation Review Panel (ARP) comprising individuals with specific expertise in the scope of accreditation sought. The ARP reviews the assessment report in its entirety and makes an independent decision regarding accreditation.

Independent, impartial panel — members selected for domain expertise, conflicts of interest excluded.
05
Final Stage
Accreditation Decision

If accreditation is approved, a Certificate of Accreditation is issued and the organisation is listed on the UKAB public register. If accreditation is not approved, the applicant is advised in writing of the reasons for the decision and a further application may be submitted at a later date.

Once accredited, UKAB makes regular surveillance visits to assess the CAB's ongoing compliance with accreditation criteria. UKAB also selects samples of CAB auditors and inspectors for witness activities. A complete reassessment takes place every three years.
